Editing, Websites for Publishing, and Alternatives to Movie Maker Overview of the issues and places for publishing videos on the web, alternatives to using Movie Maker (Voice Thread, etc.), and time to edit your projects.

This week you will be given time to edit your film.  However, we will also discuss alternatives to using Movie Maker for video projects.  There are thousands (I may be exaggerating a little bit) of websites that let kids make movies of their own.  Today we will discuss:

Educreations - http://www.educreations.com

Next Vista for Learning -http://www.nextvista.org/

Voice Thread - www.voicethread.com

Xtranormal - http://www.xtranormal.com/

Free Tech For Teachers - http://www.freetech4teachers.com/p/video-creation-resources.html

Working on Your Storyboard and Script

Last week you should have watched the videos (ick) I posted on You Tube and Vimeo which explained the video project I do with my students.  This week we will talk a little bit more in depth about scripts and storyboards.

Below is a link to the documents I handed out in class.

Publishing Your Videos!

Yay!!  We will share your video next week.  Remember to preview your video before you officially publish it.  Make any edits you may need before you publish your movie.

HP Instructions -

On the tool bar at the top of the page you will see a "Publish Movie" icon.  Click there.  Next, a dialog box will open asking you what size you would like to save your movie as.  Go with the default option.  Choose a place to save your movie to and click "publish".  The amount of music, video, and images in your project will determine how long it will take to publish.  Once it's complete it will ask you to view the video!  Voila!  You are done! (I did this from memory. I am sorry if there are errors.)

Dell Instructions:

Click on the link that says "save to my computer".  Choose a place to save your movie.  Choose best quality. Click next.  When you click "finish" you can view your video!

Adding Audio and Special Effects

Today we will focus on adding audio and "special effects" to your video.  Audio can range from recorded voice to music or sound effects.  I will show you a couple of great sites for finding audio.  Special effects are a great way to make your video more exciting.  You can add age, speed up a portion of your video, add colors, or make the video look weird.  Today we will also look at how to overlap images.

You video should be ready to publish by next class.  We will share your videos the following week.

Capturing Video

There are several ways to capture video to include in your project.  Today we will take a look at Flip Cameras, digital cameras, screen capture, using Power Point, and online video.  We will discuss the pros and cons of each type and give you a chance to try a couple of different options.  Some video may require conversion to be compatible with Movie Maker and I will show you a couple of options for doing that.

Flipping the Classroom and Your Videos

Busy day today!
First we will discuss your ideas for your own personal videos.
What topics did you choose?  Why did you choose it?  How do you plan on sharing your ideas with your kids?  What have you noticed about other teacher made videos?  How did they make it interesting?

Next - How teacher made videos can be used in the classroom.  Take a look at Khan Academy and how they structure their lessons.  Then take a look at the article from the Economist "Flipping the Classroom" and the info graphic describing the flipped classroom.  Think about the following questions and post your response below:  do you think you could make the flipped classroom work for you?  What are some pros and cons about the flipped classroom?  How do you think your teacher made videos could play a role?

Finally- Play with Movie Maker!  I will show you a couple of steps to star with and then you will have time to work on your projects.

Come Up An Idea

Today we discussed why we use videos in school. Now it's your turn! By next week come up with an idea for your own teacher made video. Outline how you would envision it being explained in a video for your students. Check out the links below to help jump start your planning process.

Creating Video Projects

Videos are an excellent media to introduce to any class.  They provide visuals for the concepts that we teach in class that can make a subject come alive.  Creating video projects is an even better way for students to interact with each other and the content that they learn in class.  Throughout this course you will be creating two videos.  The first one is an instructional video that you will make for your students about a concept for your class.  The second one will be a team project in which I will take you through the process of leading a video project in your classroom.
The objective of the course is for you to leave class with something you can use in with your students and you will have the knowledge to use and create videos on your own!

January 30 - Week One:  Online – Benefits of Using Videos and Video Projects

Welcome to Creating Video Projects

After reading Richard Byrne's "Making Video's on the Web"  think about how you might incorporate video projects into your class.  His article explores the many possibilities for video projects and some of the websites available for creating videos WITHOUT using cameras and the tools available for editing videos and images online.   We won't get into that much in this class.  However, he offers valuable information and resources for finding images, sound, and places to display or find video.
Share below some of your ideas.  We will begin our next class with your responses.
