Flipping the Classroom and Your Videos

Busy day today!
First we will discuss your ideas for your own personal videos.
What topics did you choose?  Why did you choose it?  How do you plan on sharing your ideas with your kids?  What have you noticed about other teacher made videos?  How did they make it interesting?

Next - How teacher made videos can be used in the classroom.  Take a look at Khan Academy and how they structure their lessons.  Then take a look at the article from the Economist "Flipping the Classroom" and the info graphic describing the flipped classroom.  Think about the following questions and post your response below:  do you think you could make the flipped classroom work for you?  What are some pros and cons about the flipped classroom?  How do you think your teacher made videos could play a role?

Finally- Play with Movie Maker!  I will show you a couple of steps to star with and then you will have time to work on your projects.

  1. I'm not sure how the "flip" would work for a library class. About 1/4 of the time is spent selecting books. I will mull that over. But the pros of "flipping" to me would be the ability for a student to go at their own pace at home with a video to learn concepts. There are some cons though - for children who never do their homework - odds are they won't watch the video at home either!. And how do we make sure they have the techology at home to do so? And do we have the technology in our schools to allow a classroom teacher to view what students are doing and get stuck on in the classroom? Don't think so! Also, the con regarding instant gratification of badges and not challenging themselves, so they can continue to win badges is a real concern - I see this in the computer lab often. Kids love the certificates!
Would my video help me flip a class - yes! They could learn about selecting a good book and then come to class and do so! Flipping is an interesting concept but the technology to put it in place at home and in school is critical.
